Who Should Attend?

Parents, caregivers, special needs teachers, psychologists, nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists, behavioral therapists, marriage and family therapists, physical therapists, mental health counselors and clinical social workers

Objectives/Attendees will:

  • Understand the basic contribution of genetics to autism.
  • Appreciate the overlap between autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual disability, epilepsy and ADHD.
  • Gain understanding of biological, psychological, and social aspects of intervention for individuals affected by autistic syndromes over the life course.
  • Recognize essential elements of effective behavioral modification plans at each stage of development.
  • Appreciate how genetic findings can inform the development of therapies.
  • Gain appreciation for elements of advocacy regarding educational and occupational support that can be effective in promoting the highest level of adaptive functioning.
  • Learn how rapid quantitative approaches characterizing autism have led to new ways social development can be feasibly mapped over the life course, and in response to treatment.
  • Gain understanding of origins and signs of treatable comorbid psychiatric conditions in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Be apprised of methods to treat psychiatric conditions that commonly co-occur with autism.

Speaker: Daniel Geschwind, MD, PhD, director of the Neurogenetics Program and the Center for Autism Research and Treatment (CART)

Daniel Geschwind, MD, PhD, director of the Neurogenetics Program and the Center for Autism Research and Treatment (CART) and co-director of the Center for Neurobehavioral Genetics at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Dr. Geschwind is also the Gordon and Virginia MacDonald Distinguished Chair in Human Genetics and a professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine. The Geschwind Laboratory focuses on integrating basic neurobiology, genetics and genomics with translational studies of human diseases.

John N. Constantino, MD, (who spoke at the 2011 Autism Symposium), the Blanche F. Ittleson professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Constantino also is director of the William Greenleaf Elliott Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, associate director of the Intellectual and Disability Research Center, and co-director of the Center for Violence and Injury Prevention at the George Warren School of Social Work, also at Washington University.

Because children have special health care needs, everything about our hospital is designed just for them and their loved ones.

The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville is a full service academic setting serving the population of northeast Florida. Our Pediatric Department is the largest and fastest growing department within the university system. The Pediatric Department is comprised of 108 faculty with 12 specialties represented and 36 pediatric residents. The Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville has 16 pediatric divisions providing world-class care to children with complex health problems and needs. Serving children from Northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, the facility sits on the banks of the St. Johns River and is affiliated with Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
